Murray Rotary & Affiliated Non-Profits / Bikes 4 Kids Utah

Since 2008, the Salt Lake Valley B4K Race has grown from a citizen hill climb to a three-event omnium to the USA Cycling stage race format in 2011 and 2012. This race is poised to become one of the premier stage races in the intermountain region with a prime spot on the amateur racing calendar and proximity to a major city center.

The race is an official permitted USA Cycling Event. While we expect to attract racers from all over the intermountain region, the majority of the racers will come from Utah. The event is an official Utah Cycling Association points-event making it an important stop on the State’s only official road racing calendar.

Since incorporating into the UCA calendar, this race has attracted top-flight amateur racers and teams from the intermountain region.  USA Cycling Categories from Category 5 beginners to experienced Pro and Category 1-2 racers are represented.

The 2013 Race is presented by the USAC clubs Revolution Racing, Plan7 | Brightface, and DNA Cycling p/b Plan7, all based in the Salt Lake Valley. All proceeds from this race go to the Bikes for Kids Utah and the Murray Rotary Club organizations.

  About Bikes for Kids Utah
“Providing a Positive Education and Cycling Experience for Disadvantaged Children.”

This non-profit organization, established in 2006 by Debbie Reid, provides Utah kids with free bicycles to help them play, exercise, get to school and develop a healthy hobby. Using proceeds generated from corporate and individual sponsorships and special events (such as the Salt Lake Valley B4K Stage Race), Bikes for Kids has provided 5,000 new bikes to children since it’s inception.

The main focus of the organization is to provide disadvantaged children with a positive education and effective life-skills learned through owning and riding a bicycle. To do so they are instructed in bicycle safety, the importance of obeying traffic signals, and wearing helmets. They are taught about the importance of regular exerciseand how a bicycle can help one to gain better health. A bicycle also offers them an alternative means of transportation that can help them feel more confident and self-reliant.

The groups of children (age 7-9) are generally selected from the Boys & Girls Clubs in the Salt Lake Valley, the Guadalupe Schools, and Rose Park Elementary School. If applicable, excess monetary
proceeds raised go to the Guadalupe School, Donated Dental, and Murray Rotary Foundation to help with bicycle lane improvements. Any unclaimed bikes are donated to various local children’s charities.

In it’s first year, Bikes for Kids Utah was ranked 24th in Outside Magazine’s the “Outside One-Hundred,” a list of top newsworthy athletes, products, gadgets and bold ideas. It has also received the recognition of Salt Lake City native Dave Zabriskie, the third American cyclist to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France.

Large donations have come from Mass Mutual Financial Group with its Community Service Award and the Sorenson Legacy Foundation. Bikes for Kids Utah and the Salt Lake Valley B4K Stage Race are staffed and operated by volunteers.

The success of the Salt Lake Valley B4K Stage Race is dependent on the kind support provided by sponsors of the race. Sponsors can provide in-kind donations of goods and services as well as cash
donations that are made directly to the Murray Rotary Club and/or Bikes for Kids Utah.
