Salt Lake Rotary Club members celebrate National Polio Eradication Day in India

A report from Rotarian Floyd Hatch:

Several Salt Lake Rotary members, their partners, friends, and children joined Utah Rotary Polio Plus Chair Scott Leckman to help inoculate children in India recently. The group included Anne Kim, a 15 year old Highland High student and member of Interact.

January 11 was "National Polio Eradication Day". Children, all under 5 years of age, we're inoculated in 200 different locations throughout the country. Our contingent inoculated at least 200 children.

The effort of the Indian government, Rotary International, and the World Health Organization has had a huge impact on this terrible disease. 2011 is the first year that there was not a documented case of polio in India.  There are only 4 countries remaining in the world that have not been able to eliminate the disease.

Our contingent was also able to tour several elementary and middle age schools that have been benefitted by members of Salt Lake Rotary as well as Indian Rotary clubs. Of note, a "girl's only" latrine built for a school in the Agra region, enjoyed a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring Scott and last year's 2011 contingent that donated $3,000 towards the renovation.

Our contingent has returned to Utah with a better knowledge of just how blessed web really are. We are very grateful to Scott, his love of the Indian people, and the expertise that he has developed in one of the most interesting countries in the world. Thank you, Scott!
