Springville Rotary Club Lends a Hand in Guatemala.

Several Springville Rotarian's recently traveled to the Village of San Pedro, Peten, Guatemala. While there the club members accomplished several goals that had been set before the trip.

1. A playground was purchased and built for the village children. The men of the village were eager to help and soon were leading the build.


2. Each child in the village must pay $15 a month to attend school. Because of this many are unable to attend. To give more children the chance to learn, scholarships were established to allow over twenty children to have access to education. Scholarships for some university students were also put in place.




3. Clothing, school supplies, and some hygiene products were also distributed to hundreds of children and mothers from the village at an event that was prepared in the upper village with games and activities for the local children.



4. The group also met with the Peten Rotary Club to lay ground work for Future Vision projects we can partner on. Some ideas that were small library for the village, morning meal programs for the school children, etc.

Bob Perry, a member of the Springville Rotary, met Moya while on a Rotary trip Guatemala. Bob was there to drill water wells for villages that didn't have clean running water. Moya had been a Rotarian in Guatemala for a number of years. In fact, Moya was named Rotarian of the year in Guatemala in 2010. Bob and Moya quickly developed a friendship. They also developed shared goals for humanitarian work in Guatemala. Bob and Moya's story about the need for aid in Guatemala was so compelling that the Springville Rotary decided to get involved.

Murray Rotary Club Green House Project

We had about 10 volunteers at the Murray Green House Thursday, Feb 23rd.  We accomplished the assistance they needed in transplanting young plants to larger containers and it only took an hour.  We will be assisting them again in March.  Come join us!

Murray Rotary Club Upcoming Events

Murray Green House, with the assistance from Murray Rotary Club, has received contributions from Home Depot and Window World to make many improvements.  Window World has donated two thirds of the new windows being installed.

Thursday, February 23rd at 6 pm, several Murray Rotarians are supporting the Murray Green House in transplanting the hundreds of young plants now being prepared for sale later in the spring.  We welcome fellow Rotarians to join us.  The Green House is located at 900 East 6366 South.

Red Cross Blood Drive at RC Willey's is scheduled for March 17th.  The Red Cross bus will be in the parking lot that day.  RC Willey's will present each donor with a $25 gift certificate from the store.  The event will repeat itself in October.

President Elect Training this weekend promises lots of Rotary information

This Friday and Saturday all incoming Presidents and many President elect nominees will gather in Provo for the annual Presidents-elect Training Seminar all getting ready for the new Rotary Year which starts in July. District Governor Elect Jerry Summerhays and his Training Committee have a full agenda scheduled.

District Leadership Meeting: Assistant Governors & District Committee Chairs Receive Training

District Governor Elect (DGE) Jerry Summerhays and DG Nominee Steve Skinner (speaking in photo right) shared the plans for the upcoming year with 24 AGs and District Committee Chairs.

DGE Jerry announced that “Peace Through Service” will be Rotary International President Elect Sakuji Tanaka’s theme starting next July.  “Clubs Rule In Increasing Rotary Service” will be the district’s theme.

We are increasing from 10 to 14 AGs next year, to help our 47 clubs better.

This last year District Governor (DG) Rick Cambra added Public Relations and Membership Committees.  DGE Jerry and DG Nominee Steve have recently organized the District Training, Technology, Service, Peace, and Extension Committees.  These are all standing committees which will continue from year to year.

DGE Jerry (speaking in photo right) announced that the Sorenson Legacy Foundation has given our Rotary District a $65,000 Trails, Streams and Parks Grant.  The Service Committee will allocate this money to the clubs, with the smaller clubs getting $1,000 each and the larger clubs getting more, with the Salt Lake Club allocated $6,000.  We hope to do a million dollars of good, because clubs will seek outside money and partnerships to do larger projects.

St. George Rotary Club celebrates milestones in fight to kill Polio

St. George, Utah — During their quarterly Club Assembly, members of the St. George Rotary Club celebrated local and international milestones in the fight to eradicate polio. Locally, the club marked fulfillment of their obligation to raise $200 million in funds as part of two challenge grants totaling $355 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to Rotary International.

The club raised $10,483.95 toward the effort since 2008 and surpassed their assessment of $10,036.05 well before the June 30 deadline.

Westminster Rotaract Upcoming Events

Since becoming a club January 5, Rotaract has held  an opening social, sorted clothing for refugees, and supported the Sugarhouse Rotary Chili Open. 

The good news is- we are just getting started. Rotaract has tons of great events and projects already planned for the upcoming months. 

• Feb 7^th is the deadline for Rotaract members to turn in an application for our summer service trip to Mexico. 

• Feb 9th at 7:30 pm is our next Rotaract meeting. Come and join us at Walker 1 on the Westminster College campus.

• Career speed-dating with Rotarians is being planned for Friday, February 24^th at 6:00 pm. This event will likely take place on the Westminster College campus, and will provide opportunities to get to know successful individuals in the community. (And have loads of fun.)

• On March 23^rd (possibly the 24^th) we will be holding a dinner fundraiser and auction to help Rotaracters pay for our Mexico service trip. The dinner will feature Peruvian food and auctions of services and donated items. 

We are also planning several service projects, including a dog-walk 5k to support the Adopt Me Society in April, a large service project with the Interactors in May, and a project to benefit kids at Primary Children’s.

Westminster Rotaract Club at the Chili Open

Last weekend was the Sugarhouse Rotary’s Annual Chili Open and we as a Rotaract Club decided to get involved and serve in any way we could. It was a huge success! We all ventured down to Wheeler Farm in Murray, UT for fun, friends, food, and fundraising activities like golfing and a 5k for multiple charities. Here are just a few of the causes that the Chili Open helps to support.

Many of our Rotaractors turned up for the event. There were volunteers to help in the food line inside the barn dishing up the main attraction – lots and lots of delicious chili!! Here are some of our members rockin’ health code hats for the food line. Super stylish!

St. George Rotary Club presents awards for distinguished service to youth

St. George, Utah — Dr. Allen Hilton and Eldon McArthur, members of the St. George Rotary Club, were presented with the Cliff Dochterman Award on Monday, January 30 in a ceremony conducted at the quarterly Club Assembly of the St. George Rotary Club.

The Cliff Dochterman Award is Rotary’s highest award for service to youth through the Boy Scouts of America. The presentation is made by local Rotary clubs to recognize members who perform outstanding service to youth as volunteer scouting leaders.

The award was presented by Linda Baker, president, who cited Mr. McArthur’s decades of distinguished service to youth in numerous positions and Dr. Hilton’s numerous years serving youth in unit, district and sector volunteer positions.
